FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Owner Builder Workshops

How do I sign up for the workshops?
There are several ways. You can fill out the PDF form online at www.darbyschoolhouse.com and then print and fax, scan to email or mail it in. Remember that registration closes a week before class starts. You may also call the Darby office at 360-546-5551, and we will take your information for you.

Where are the workshops held?
In Vancouver, WA at Fort Darby, the home of Darby Rural. When you register, we will send you a map and directions.

Will I actually learn everything I need to know?
We will cover all the basics you need to know to successfully navigate your project as a contractor. We will be giving you as much information as you can possibly hold during the workshops. Nothing that time allows will be held back. You will also receive handouts and written notes on the curriculum. We encourage you to read everything we give you, take notes, ask questions and take your time on the project. The number one killer is lack of information; the second is hurrying. If at the end of the workshop, you still feel you need more help, please let us know. There are several options available.

What if I can’t make it to one of the workshops?
You may either send someone in your place or make up the workshop at another time during the year. The worksheets and curriculum will be available to you immediately after the workshop.

Can I bring someone with me to a workshop?
Yes, you may bring someone with you. However, space is limited so please let us know when you register if you are bringing someone. There is not enough room for every participant to bring a buddy.

Can children come to the workshop?
Please do not bring children under the age of 13.

Who can come to this workshop?
Anyone who wants to learn how to be their own contractor. Remember that not everyone has the time, energy, emotional fortitude, physical capacity or skill level to accomplish this task. If you are curious, this is a great way to find out if you are up to the challenge.

How is the price of the workshop determined?
The price is based on $30.00 per hour. There will be an additional 30 minutes of time available at the end of each session.

Will I get to talk to anyone about concerns or questions regarding my project?
Yes. This will be accomplished in three ways. After you register, we will speak with you in an attempt to glean as much information about your project as possible so that we can address your specific issues during class time. Second, there will be opportunity to ask questions during instruction time when the instructor is explaining aspects of the process that apply to your project. Third, instructors and vendors will be available for an additional 30 minutes after the workshop is over.

What if I decide I need more than what is offered in the workshops?
Darby Consultants offer several packages that complement the workshop curriculum. If you choose to hire Darby Consultants, your workshop fee will be deducted from your consulting fee.

What is the format for the workshops?
We will start with instruction. During this time you are invited to ask questions for clarification or specific application. This will be followed by Q & A on specific projects. The end of the workshop will be based on hands on work. Please bring as much information about your project as possible.

Is there a certification?
Yes, there will be a test at the end of the workshop series. You will graduate as a qualified Darby DIY and receive a certificate and an ID card.

Will I have access to the Darby Preferred Vendor Network?
If you graduate from the workshop and are willing to sign the customer agreement, you will have full access to Darby recommended sub-contractors and suppliers. Your access to them and receipt of preferred pricing is dependent on your qualification as a Darby Client.

Is there a refund policy?
Your refund will be pro-rated based on when you cancel. You will receive a full refund within four weeks of first class, two thirds within three weeks and one third within two weeks. No refunds will be granted after classes.

DIY Issues

How much can I save by being my own contractor?
Typically, contractors charge a percentage for profit and overhead. They also know how to streamline the project and avoid costly mistakes. If you do your own contracting without assistance, you may save some, but you will loose the benefit of a contractor’s discounts and experience. That’s where Darby Consultants and Darby Schoolhouse come in. With access to our preferred sub-contractor and supplier network, you may save all of the contractor mark up and then some. If in addition to that you actually provide labor and find deals on products, you may save up to 50%. That’s built in equity!

Can I pull my own permits?
Yes. There are three problems with getting your own permits: Time, money and hassle. However, if you have the time and are willing to risk the money and deal with the headache, there is no reason you cannot get your own permits. For more information on this subject see the FAQ page on the Darby Permits website.

How do I select a qualified sub-contractor that will be reliable and do good work?
We teach a system for finding good subs as part of our workshop series. The system and the checklist worksheet are available for sale. If you have successfully completed the workshop series, you have access to the Darby preferred network of vendors. There are none better.

Can I get financing for my project if I am my own contractor?
This depends entirely on the bank. Some will let you (especially if there is some kind of construction experience in your resume); others require a contractor of record. In some cases, it is possible to hire a contractor of record for a price much below what you would pay if they charged their full mark up. You are basically paying for his liability.

How do I know if everything is done right on my project?
Darby provides a worksheet that details quality standards for every aspect of your project. In addition, your building inspector will make sure that your project is done according to code. If you would like help confirming the quality of different parts of your project, Darby can supply consultants who will do a complete quality check.

How do I get started on a design?
The most important factor is knowing what YOU want. If you don’t know intuitively, take as much time as you need to figure it out. Drive around and look at projects, leaf through magazines, go to home shows, spend time on the internet, evaluate your living patterns. Do whatever it takes to figure it out. Don’t just settle for what you think makes sense. Be sure.

Will it take longer if I Do It Myself?
Probably. They say time flies when you’re having fun. Make sure you’re having fun. There is not much that is more important than investing in your home, new or old. Take your time, enjoy the process. It will turn out better in the long run than it will in the short run. Make it last.

What is a DIT?
DIT stands for Do It Together. We believe that the best DIY projects are actually DIT projects where the owner builder involves the right experts. Often, time and money is saved by hiring the right craftsman rather than doing it yourself.
